With more than 500 million people lacking access to secure land today, we can all take a hint from the rules for just and equal land division in this week's Torah portion.
"Among these shall the land be apportioned as shares, according to the listed names: with larger groups increase the share, with smaller groups reduce the share. Each is to be assigned its share according to its enrollment" (Numbers 26:53-54).
The Israelites had the incredible luxury of being told how to build a just society before settling in a new place. The rationality and fairness of land distribution in Parashat Pinhas is remarkable and very different from the norms of land ownership currently present around the globe MORE.

God gives Pinhas a covenant of peace; God explains the apportionment of the Land of Israel; the daughters of Tzelophechad petition to inherit their father's portion; Moses appoints Joshua his successor.

God said to Moses, "The priest Pinhas turned My anger away from the sons of Israel by bringing My rights to bear in their midst. Therefore, I shall give to him My covenants of Peace and everlasting priesthood."
After the death of the idolatrous Israelites, God told Moses to take a count

Moses spoke to the Lord, saying, ‘Let the Lord God of all the spirits of mortal flesh appoint a person of stature over the witness congregation’” (Numbers 27:15).
Moses was the master of all prophets, and the individual who came closer to God than any other mortal in history. Now, after a chorus of rebellions against him, God tells him that he is about to be taken from this world without entering the Promised Land. His response to God demonstrates his deep and abiding commitment to his nation. He does not seek a reprieve for himself, but rather a fitting successor for his people. In so doing, he identifies the area in which he himself failed, and the qualities which his heir must have in order to succeed, thus defining the sine qua non condition of leadership for future generations, and so leaving a crucial legacy to “Knesset Yisrael.”

Just who is Pinchas?
Moses has watched Yisro ( Yitro ) return home and then Moses faces a mutiny from ten of the great tribal leaders which is quickly followed by an attempted coup led by his own cousin. Surviving that, he now loses both his siblings in quick succession.

Our haftorah speaks about the introduction of Yirmiyahu into prophecy and shows him somewhat reluctant to
